This 38-page booklet offers an accessible and engaging introduction to the Buddhist roots of modern mindfulness, with a warm focus on the Plum Village tradition. Created for both new and experienced mindfulness teachers, it brings clarity to the history, teachings and practices that continue to shape contemporary mindfulness.
The first section provides a concise history of Buddhism — the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the early councils, and the development of major traditions — offering useful context without overwhelming detail.
The second section explores the core teachings that underpin mindfulness, including the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Seven Factors of Awakening, the Five Hindrances, and the Three Jewels. It also introduces the Satipatthana Sutta and the Anapanasati Sutta in a teacher-friendly way.
The third section turns to Plum Village, with practical guidance on sitting meditation, walking meditation, deep relaxation, mindful eating, Touching the Earth and Dharma sharing — practices that teachers can easily weave into classes, workshops or retreats.
The appendices include full translations of the two key Sutras, along with commentary that helps bring them to life.
This is a grounded, approachable resource for teachers who want to deepen their understanding of the Buddhist lineage behind mindfulness and bring that richness into their teaching with confidence and authenticity.

Description
“Tony, Mindfulness and Buddhism: Lessons from Plum Village has already become one of my go-to resources. You consistently produce such high-quality materials, and this booklet is right up there. The background on the roots of mindfulness is clear, accessible and genuinely useful for teaching, and the Sutra explanations gave me fresh insight into the tradition behind our work. I also loved how practical it is — the Plum Village practices slot beautifully into classes and retreats. It’s enriched both my understanding and my teaching in a really natural way. Thank you for creating such a valuable resource.”

Students and practitioners of mindfulness are often curious about its Buddhist roots, eager to understand where these practices came from and how they have evolved. As teachers, deepening our appreciation of these origins can enrich our own practice and bring a greater sense of depth and authenticity to the experiences we offer our participants.
I first created this booklet in 2021 for a CPD day for mindfulness teachers, and continued to update it through 2022, 2023 and 2025. Now that the CPD day itself is no longer running, I’ve brought the material together here so it can still be used as a practical, accessible way to explore Buddhist history, philosophy and psychology — areas that can feel rich but sometimes overwhelming without a gentle guide.
My hope is that these teachings support your personal path as well as the journeys you accompany others on, and that they help root your mindfulness teaching in the beautiful lineage from which it has grown.
