What happens in the Mindfulness Now Course?
This 8-week course (or 4-week compressed course) is structured so as to introduce mindfulness in a gentle and encouraging manner. Each class builds on learning in the previous classes.
Participants receive a workbook, handouts and access to online audio resources.
The teacher will provide instruction and lead practice in a wide range of mindfulness techniques which will include breathing, gentle movement, meditations, visualisations and sensory awareness.
The teacher will give talks and lead discussion on the ‘mindfulness attitudes’ and participants will be able to contribute as much or as little as they are comfortable in doing. The teacher may also read stories, poetry or extracts from books that are relevant to the teachings.
Mindfulness Now includes some unique elements that are not found in other mindfulness programmes, in particular The Gift, which provides an opportunity in the final class to bring everything that has been learned together with other participants in an extended practice session. The final class ends with lunch and mindful eating.
The home practice is a significant part of the course and the teacher will provide a course workbook and give instruction on the exercises and practices to be undertaken in between the weekly classes.
There is time in every class for participants to ask questions, share their experiences and support each other.
Graduates of the course receive a certificate and are given access to additional online resources to support further practice.
Who is the teacher?
The class is led by Tony O’Shea-Poon, an experienced coach, facilitator, peace activist and teacher of Mindfulness. Tony is trained to deliver the nationally-recognised Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy courses and is licensed by the UK College of Mindfulness Meditation to teach Mindfulness Now which is accredited by the British Psychological Society. Tony is a practitioner of Mindfulness in the Plum Village style, a tradition taught by Buddhist Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh.
How much time does it take?
The full course is 13 hours in duration (including refreshment breaks).
Classes on the 8-week course are 1.5 hours each.
Classes on the 4-week course are 3 hours each, except for the final class which is 4 hours as it includes additional time for lunch and mindful eating instruction.
